I had been looking forward for this book to be published for ages! Myself, and my two adult sons are all Godzilla fans, so the idea of a Godzilla popup book sounded intriguing. I always liked popup books when I was a kid, but I am new to Mathew Reinhart’s work. Some of his previous popup books were for DC, Star Wars, Nightmare Before Christmas, Game of Thrones.
The book consists of two really large and detailed popup scenes over four pages, and I was really excited Mothra was included in one scene, as Mothra is one of my favourite Godzilla characters!
Also included is a set of gorgeous trading cards, along with a popup map on a set of pages, and another set of pages with Godzilla ephemera ‘The Godzilla Files’. I considered sharing some photos of the inside of the book, but as part of the fun for me was being surprised, so I've decided I don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone else. The book's art is really beautifully done, and for me, the trading cards actually ended up being my favourite part, they have such a lovely retro look to them. So I guess I will share at least one photo from the inside! Here of my two favourite cards:
I visited Matthew’s website and was delighted to see he shares his own DIY tutorials and templates for making simple popups. Definite fun for kids but for adults as well as you could build on some of the simple designs.
The illustrations in the book are by Yuko Shimizu, multi-award-winning Japanese illustrator based in New York City. Yuko is also an instructor at The School of Visual Art. Chip Carter who has worked on various other licensed products such as Trivial Pursuit, is a co-author.
